Today, we're going to share with you the five reasons why you can’t retire.

1. The World has set you up for Failure

Think about it. It's so easy to spend nowadays. Everything's cashless, digital, you can even pay with your phone. So the world wants us to spend and spend and spend but does it really want us to save?

Look at it this way, everywhere we go we see billboards, advertising, getting us to spend as much as we can, but we don't really see anything that encourages us to save.

2. You're being too YOLO

The culture of You Only Live Once really does prevent us from being able to retire.

Think about it. If I'm going to say, let's blow my entire paycheck on this party. Yeah! You only live once! But let's face it. We do only live once. But we also live really long lives. Depending on where you are, the average life expectancy can be 80 to 90 years old. If I'm 25, I'm going to have another 40-50 years of life. Think about it this way.

Get everything you want!  We advocate spending but we also advocate saving for a rainy day. Put aside a small portion of your monthly income to your nest egg. And before you know it, you'll be ready to retire.

3. Lack of Education

Let's face it. schools don't really teach about personal finance, much less something more complex like retirement.

So if you really want to retire, pick up a book, join a support group, talk to some friends. Better yet, seek out the qualified professional. We'll be able to help you plan your retirement.

4. We're being too Conservative

If you look at your portfolio right now, and you find that most of your money is locked up in bonds, time deposit, or bank deposit, you're actually not growing your money. These instruments produce very little return. Yes, they are low risk, but they don't produce enough return to grow your nest egg. Look at your time horizon. Look at how long you have 'till retirement. If you're in your 20s, you're in your 30s, you've got a good 30 to 40 years, which means you can afford to take on more risk. Get into some stocks, get into some funds, go into equities, and grow your money. Look at something with a higher rate of return with a little bit more risk.

5. Lack of Planning

Think about it. We plan a lot of things. We plan parties. We plan our careers. We plan our home. We plan so many things. Why don't we plan retirement? It's not as hard as it sounds. Take a piece of paper, get a pencil, write this down. When do I want to retire? How much do I need to retire? Why do I want to retire? We'll cover the how in our next blog posts.
