“It was just supposed to be a friendly game of 7-a-side futsal… how did it end up like this?” Alan thought, slumped in his wheelchair.
A few hours ago, Alan and his university buddies had just ended a long-delayed reunion dinner and then gone on to play a few rounds of futsal. One particular round had gotten rather intense. Alan was entangled in a nasty challenge and fainted.
When he had come to, Alan was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Alan tried to get up, but was met with a searing pain coming from his left leg; he was also unable to see out of his right eye.
Alan glanced down with his good eye and was dismayed and noticed his left calf bone was broken; the bone sticking out of his leg. The shock of the sight - coupled with the pain - caused Alan to pass out again.
Alan was eventually diagnosed with a broken left calf bone, a hairline fracture on his left thigh bone, and irreparable retina damage. The impact of the tackle had caused Alan to fall face first, shattering his glasses. Alan was now blind in one eye, permanently.
The only silver lining was that he had covered himself under a Personal Accident plan, which helped offset some of the medical costs associated with his accident. His ambulance service cost was also paid for.
The problem? Alan works as a surveyor. His permanent blindness in one eye and broken leg would pose significant problems to his ability to continue in his previous line of work. He had some accident coverage, but it was becoming more apparent to Alan that it was not enough accident coverage, especially for his line of work.
The lesson to be learned here is that accident coverage ought to be appropriately adjusted for one’s occupation. While companies would normally compensate for workplace related accidents, in Alan’s case the accident occurred in his own time - his personal time. It is important that Alan considered his occupation class while deciding on a Personal Accident coverage.
